Does anyone even like honeydew melon? I asked the waiter for some fruit for my oatmeal this morning. He brought a bowl to the table and hiding in the bottom of the bowl was one piece of honeydew melon. I put the berries in my oatmeal, ate the cantaloupe and pineapple and left the honeydew. It’s just “a space-taker-upper” after all.Read More
“Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” John 2:17
I read John 2:13-17 and my attention is drawn to
• the Passover as reminder of God’s holiness, His just wrath against sin and His Son’s death as merciful means of deliverance
• the Temple as a symbol of entering the presence of Holy God
• Jesus’ response to their indifference
Our Community Meal last night was beautiful! About 140 people enjoyed Caribbean tostadas and a delicious melon salad courtesy of Jardin de Milagros, Chef James, and our wonderful volunteers. It was so much fun to visit with friends, old and new. In the energy and sweetness of the evening, God spoke to my heart. He did it through a conversation with one of our guests. I asked her, “What is the Lord was teaching you right now?” She looked at me, with quiet resolve in her eyes, and said, “It’s easy to hate, but love is courage.”Read More

My drive to the cafe this morning from the west side was slow as it often is these days. The traffic is “horrendous” and a great inconvenience. Before the days of these massive road projects, I would enter the freeway and speed towards downtown focused only on myself and what waited for me at work. But something interesting happened today as I inched along. I chose the inside lane for my torturous, start-and-stop journey. And I noticed something that I’d never noticed before.Read More
