After I retired I wanted to find an organization where I could serve the Lord and also help individuals in need. I was introduced to the Mustard Seed Café which shared the same goals. I started volunteering as a dishwasher but then added food preparation and serving the free meals to my activities. Many others volunteer and there are now 30 to 35 volunteers who come regularly each week to prepare and cook meals, serve them, clean the facilities and, most importantly, share the love of Christ with people. All of the volunteers love the Lord and are willing to do whatever they are asked, whether it is cutting up vegetables, washing dishes, cleaning the kitchen, serving the meals, talking with those in need, or sharing the gospel.
I was honored to be asked to be part of the board of directors of the Mustard Seed Café. The board is involved in advising and supporting the executive director and staff with decisions about the direction of ministry of the Mustard Seed Café, as well as fund raising activities, grant applications, interacting with churches and other ministries, and financial decisions. The members of the board have the same heart for helping those in need and sharing Christ’s love.
I am blessed to be a bridge between the volunteers and the board. I share the weekly activities and difficulties that the volunteers and staff face so that the board will have a better understanding of what takes place each week. I share with the staff and volunteers the plan for achieving the goals of the Mustard Seed Café’s mission. I can also facilitate communication between the executive director and staff and the board on one side, and the volunteers on the other. I remain thankful to the Lord that I can serve Him and be useful to Him and to this ministry.
